Librarians play vital role in higher education

HUBLI: Dr K R Narashiman, joint director of Collegiate Education, Dharwad, said librarians have a great role to play in strengthening the higher education system in the state and the country as well.

He was speaking after inaugurating the training programme organized by Sri Kadasiddeshwar Arts College and H S Kotambri Science Institute, Hubli, for librarians appointed after 2007, here on Monday.

He said librarians should come up with new and innovative ideas to enhance the knowledge of students and take initiatives in organizing knowledge-based programmes for students in their respective colleges.

He also gave them suggestions on maintaining their libraries in a systematic manner by utilizing modern technology and information science. He said librarians should ensure that they play a vital role in creating awareness about the benefits of various government schemes among the economically-poor and backward community students.

Ningappa N Arabgonda, a well-known librarian, called upon librarians to convert their problems into challenges and provide good services to readers who come to their libraries to improve their knowledge.

Mahesh D Horakeri, president of the District Librarians Association, Hubli, also spoke about the administrative management of college librarians, professional integrity, and librarians' problems and solutions.

Other librarians shared their knowledge about the usage of software in maintaining libraries, demands and challenges of librarians and other issues.

Principal V M Kinagi, B S Malawad, M M Hebbali,M N Mulimani, Geeta Kottennavar, S B Pachapur, Dr G G Kadadevar, S S Kalnyani and others were present.
